our college: junior years

Beyond the Classroom

Our outdoor education programme directly contributes to Trinity’s goal to develop the ‘whole person’. We encourage play, exploration, and discovery through a range of educational experiences outside the classroom that build vital skills such as communication, teamwork, independence and resilience, personal organisation, and social competency.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Learning to be Great Role Models
We do not appoint school captains in the Junior Years at Trinity. The development of leadership skills is built into the curriculum in Year 5 exploring the qualities of leadership, great leaders, communication and leadership skills and the concept of servant leadership. All the Year 5 students become student leaders after completion of this Leadership Unit. The student leaders assist their peers and teachers in the school by modelling appropriate behaviour, managing the sports-shed borrowing, bin-management, placing and removing sports equipment safety padding, and canteen service. Student leaders also play an important role in assisting in the library and playing with younger students in the playground.

PASTORAL CARE

Trinity has a Restorative Practices philosophy, in keeping with our Lutheran approach to education and relational management. This philosophy provides Trinity students with the opportunity to develop self-discipline and positive behaviours in a caring, supportive environment with quality relationships between all members of the school community – parent, students and staff alike – being the number one focus. We strive to make each girl and boy at Trinity Lutheran College feel safe, secure and valued.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Not all learning happens in the classroom. There is much to be gained in personal and social development, the building of interpersonal relationships between teacher and student, and the creating of a class spirit through participation in educational camps and tours.

Students begin the Outdoor Education and Camps program in Year 3 with a one-night camp away and progress to a two-night camp away in Years 4 and 5. Through experiences in the outdoors our students are challenged on many levels: physically, emotionally and spiritually. One of the best things about camp is the opportunity to work with different people, allowing students to recognise the strengths and talents of others within the year group while facing challenges together.
